Why do very wealthy people eat breakfast at McDonald's?

I know, the food is not great and it's supposedly terrible for me.  My wife moans when I tell her I ate breakfast at McDonald's.  It's okay for me; I like what I get rather well.

Over the years I have noticed something interesting when eating my breakfasts at McDonald's.  Boulder is not a big town so many of the wealthy "moguls" are recognizable and relatively few in number.  I used to be surprised by how often I ran into these rich people at McDonald's enjoying breakfast.   I am sure they could enjoy a far more sophisticated and appealing breakfast in a fashionable location anywhere else.  But they don't.  Certainly they don't need to do it because it is cheap.  However, they seem to really enjoy an item or two from the dollar menu washed down with a sixty cent coffee that comes with unlimited refills.

So what is it all about?  I suspect that what made them super rich is that they worked hard, saved diligently and experienced some good luck along the way.  These core values are engrained in their personalities and now that they could eat anywhere they still appreciate saving money and being frugal.

Today I spoke with one of my "rich" friends today at McDonald's.  He asked how the real estate market was going.  I replied it was slower than I like and given interest rates and prices I would think it would be much stronger.  He was surprised because "You will never find deals like this again and with interest rates so low real estate is a great opportunity".

"I couldn't agree more", I said, "but we still have a problem".

"What is it?" he asked.

"People still lack confidence in their own financial and job security and this fear is putting them in lock down mode", I bemoaned.

What he told me was a revelation that I will never forget!

He said, "There is no such thing as security in life.  You only have opportunity, and the more opportunities you create the more 'security' you feel like you have".

If you take the time to really listen to this logic carefully you will understand that it is absolutely true.  You might have all the money in the world and then something unforseen comes along and tips your cart.  Is this why he eats his breakfast at McDonald's?  I don't know but he is right about one thing:  Go each day and create opportunity for yourself and you won't have to eat at McDonald's anymore.
